Grew up on Walloon Lake in northern Michigan near Petoskey and have many years of boating experience. Power boats, pontoon boats, sailboats, catamarans, sail-boards and even kite surfing. Back in the day I was a tournament slalom water skier. I'm sure my Dad was never thrilled when he received the fuel bills every month. Currently reside in Spring Lake, MI and live on the water. Own a Four Winns Horizon 260 and a small inflatable with a 9.9 hp outboard, and both are available for rent. With all those years of experience on the water, I still managed to sink a gorgeous 41 foot Marinette aft-cabin in Lake Huron the day after we bought it. Half mile off shore with the latest GPS chartplotter installed the night before. From 23 feet of water to 2.0 feet of water in the blink of an eye.... that far off shore. All rocks. Not a big fan of Lake Huron, though one of these days I want a do-over. That little decimal point on the GPS display wound up being a near 6-figure dollar mistake. The place we hit is called "revenue rocks" by the Port Sanilac Marina........ I wasn't the first one to crash there. With that said, I should have asked the locals about the area, what to watch out for, and how best to navigate. I now ask any renter of my boat, where do you plan to go? Going to Lake Michigan? That's fine, but here are the things you need to avoid and pay attention to. It's why I keep a 3-ring binder on the boat with some detailed lake/river maps and go through it with every renter. Electronics and GPS's are great tools, but they are no excuse for not paying attention. I've had some interesting experiences in my life, but boarding a Coast Guard boat at 3am is not one I wish to repeat..... and the crash happened at 9:30pm. At the age of 50 at the time, never been so scared in my life. That is exactly why I have become such a promoter of boater safety. Even when you think all is good, something bad can happen. If you rent my boat there is no such thing as a dumb question. Ask away. I know this area like the back of my hand. Now you understand why the Four Winns is named "On The Rocks II".
