The boat

Gas Light is designed after the famous San Francisco scow schooners that sailed the Bay during the California Gold Rush Era. She is a living replica of a three-masted 1874 scow schooner, with the same name. Gas Light, built of modern materials and completed in 2000, boasts many guest comforts and conveniences of modern-day sailing yachts. Our sailing yacht is designed like no other on the bay with your absolute comfort in mind. Her design is inherently very stable, she sails flat and comfortably handles any weather conditions. Gas Light's amenities include a terrific sound system, 2-modern restrooms, full bar, a speak-easy open concept below decks and expansive decks to lounge on!

Charter voyages may last three hours or longer and are fully customizable by clients with many catering and beverage service options.

While most of our charters are 15-35 guests, our yacht is comfortable for larger groups and certified by the U.S. Coast Guard to carry up to 49 passengers, not counting the captain and crew.

You can board the boat at multiple locations: Pier 40, in San Francisco, Alameda, Sausalito (tide dependent) or Marina Bay in Richmond, docking fees may apply.

Our Experienced Captain and Crew will recruit anyone wanting to help hoist the sails and then share their knowledge of San Francisco’s enchanting maritime history and the many beautiful sights along the waterfront in an effort to enhance the experience for all aboard. Your "crew" can participate at their own interest level. Participation is always encouraged but voluntary. Our captain and crew are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and encourage you to take the helm or help raise the sails.

Gas Lights’ crew is extremely attentive to guest experiences and feedback. As such, our staff is happy to provide suggestions and assistance with plotting your voyage around the Bay and arranging the details of your trip, helping to ensure that every minute of your charter is as fun and fulfilling as possible.

We specialize in Team Building sails, weddings, birthdays and memorial ash scatterings.

Come Experience the Bay in a Whole New Way!

Sail across San Francisco Bay on the 72' scow schooner GAS LIGHT, a replica of the ships that sailed these waters in the 1850s. The shipping trade was alive and well in the mid-1800s, with ships carrying goods to various ports throughout the Bay area. Flat-bottomed scows were more adept in navigating the bay's shallow waters and a scow schooner was a familiar sight sailing the inland waterways. GAS LIGHT was built in the 1990 with a steel hull which harkens back to that original design and now includes all the creature comforts of the modern era.
