“I've been sailing dinghies since I was a little kid at summer camp, but got serious when I learned to race and sail in New Zealand in 2002. I've owned Solace, a Catalina 27, since 2006. I don't get to race as much as I'd like anymore, but I still love being out on the water in the San Francisco Bay.”
Aboard since 2014
From Berkeley, CA
Eric is great to work with. Very accomodating. The boat is clean, solid, simple, no frills, easy to use. We sailed in 18-20kts with a reefed main and the rolling furler at about 80% which made for a nicely balanced boat. Sits up high enough so we only got splashed a little. I'm used to sailing the J24s which are much wetter in windy conditions.
A good value tiller boat for a great day sail. Eric was very helpful thoughout the rental process. On this trip we had two 7 yr old girls and 3 able-bodied adults with myself as Captain. The boat can be single handed, but in strong SF winds you'll want another hand or two. The boat sails remarkably well to the wind. The boat carries a 130% Genoa which we partially furled when heading into the wind. Its attached blue sail cover is a bit shredded, but the sail performs well regardless. We sailed with one reef in the main. We sailed on a close reach and a few tacks to Angel Island. We lowered sails & docked at Ayala Cove for lunch. Motored into Raccoon Straight afterward, raised Jib only and headed home on a run in The Slot in 20 kts of wind. Made excellent speed. No main up. Didn't want to risk jibing with kids on board. Boat felt solid in all conditions experienced. The top decks and cockpit are very clean. The Cabin is older but works for family day sailing. We didn't use the head, although it works fine. The engine is strong and works well. The throttle control works well. But the gear shift control is sticky and unpredictable so practice with it first before docking anywhere. The tiller is fun and works well, but requires a steady arm under way. It can pull hard depending on how your sails are set. We noticed a few loose bolts here and there which we tightened using Eric's on-board tool box. Very handy. Red classic PFD life vests are provided but if you want pristine life vests, perhaps better to bring your own. We will rent this boat again because it is really fun to sail.
We had very nice day on Eric's boat, sailing around bay. My boyfriend says it was his favourite day of our trip! Communication with Eric was very easy, he was very helpfull to showing us places where we could stop. We made trip under Golden Bridge (waves are bigger, but 2 of us are captains, so we were brave enought to handle the situation :) ), dock in piere "1,5" in downtown of San Francisco for coffee.
Boat is older but has its unique atmosphere, which we appreciated for one day trip :)
Looking forward to get back next time!
Thank you Eric for even willing to come "after" hours.
Lenka, Matej and their team
I found Eric's Solace and set up a date for sailing the Bay with my brother. The check out with Eric was thorough and we were on our way in no time. The sail, by chance, coincided with the Blue Angels practice which was a fun addition to our exerience. Everything involved with Eric and Solace was perfect and we are already looking forward to our next time. Thank you, Eric and Solace! Fair winds and following seas!
We had a great time!
Unfortunately, due to the time of year we had a wild ride the first day but the second day was absolutely beautiful. Just be sure to check the wind warnings in October! Eric was great and easy.
The boat was nice although could have been a little cleaner... The jib sail is a bit large for the boat so we had a little trouble with getting it caught in the side stays... overall it was a wonderful time abs and we definitely recommend Eric! Thank you so much!
Eric was very nice and accommodating and was willing to meet us very early even after booking his vessel the day before.
The Catalina is a perfect size for a leisurely sail around Berkeley Harbor. Wish we had more time to venture further!
This boat sails very well. With the 2nd reef point in the main and reduced jib area, it was a good match for the 20-25 knot afternoon summer wind in the Bay. Eric, the owner, met us at the marina in the morning to go through everything and answer our questions. When we returned to the marina, the engine that had started fine twice before wouldn't turn over. Eric had just had it serviced the week before and was very apologetic. It wasn't a big deal; we called the TowBoat US service that was part of the charter agreement and they brought us into our slip. I thought about sailing in but felt safer getting assistance. Overall, a great day and we'd be happy to rent from Eric again.
I had a wonderful 3 days aboard Eric's boat. Everything was as described and the boat handled great. No problems at all. Eric was good to work with and provided lists of checkout items and final return tasks to be taken care of. I look forward to my next venture on the boat in San Francisco Bay!
We had a great time on Solace and Eric couldn't have been better. The boat was a pleasure to sail, well-maintained, clean, with all the needed amenities for a day sail. Berkeley is also the perfect spot on the bay to get underway. Eric was great communicating and showing me around the boat, and anticipated all my questions and things we needed to know. I definitely hope I can rent solace again, thanks!
We had an amazing day out on Eric's boat! We were even blessed with better than expected conditions! Everything was properly discussed and he was very attentive and easy going during the whole process. He definitely knows his boat like the back of his hand. I knew what to expect and there was never a question or issue he hadn't effectively explained before hand and I felt like I comfortably understood everything I needed to know before I took the helm. Thanks Eric!
We had a great time with Eric's boat. We rented the boat for Thanksgiving with my parents and my wife. Eric welcomed us at Berkeley Marina and briefed us. There are little things that are broken on the boat like the right winch, a hole in the headsale. Also take some time to get use to the motor as the rear speed can be tricky. Overall I would definitely rent Eric's boat again.
Eric was great as usual. He met us at the harbor at the agreed upon time, gave us a brief orientation to the latest new (very small) idiosyncracies of the boat, and helped us with a minor mishap with the boat on our way back. This is a nice boat to take out for a day around the bay, and Eric is a very helpful and conscientious boat owner.
Rented Eric's boat on Labor Day weekend with my son. Eric was prompt in meeting us at the marina and going thru the details of his boat prior to departing the marina. The Catalina 27 performed very in 15-20 knot winds and we had a great day sailing with no problems with the boat.
We`re from Germany and had the boat for one great day in the San Francisco bay. The boat is simple to use, no big extra things which may drive you crasy when you don`t know how to use them.
The boat was clean and all things were running.
For handover Eric was at the pier 30 minutes before our date and gave us a good introduction.
In case we will see SFO again, we won`t hesitate to charter his boat again.
We had a great day on Eric's Catalina 27. The bay area is wonderful and everything was totally uncomplicated. The reason I am deducting one star is because there were a few issues with the boat, most notably the jig which is already rigged a several points. Overall, we were happy and I would recommend leasing from Eric.
Eric was friendly and easy going, did a great run through of Solace. She was easy to sale and performed well. No problems, and return was also easy and no stress. Lovely day out on the Bay, and spending 25 minutes with a breaching whale off Angel Island was incredible.
We had an amazing time on Eric's Catalina 27. He was extremely easy to work with and helpful. We started by sailing to Angel Island. The shadow on the backside of Angel Island is real. The wind went from about 15 knots to completely dead. It was such a nice day we even jumped in the water. We then sailed by Tiburon and tacked over to start heading towards Alcatraz. Eric had warned us about the wind and chop in that area and he was right. The boat held up great but the girls started to feel a bit sick so we eased off and headed downwind towards Treasure Island. We were treated some amazing views of the new part of the Bay Bridge and the downtown SF.
I would definitely recommend. Solace is a perfect day trip in the bay and Eric is an extremely nice guy.
Eric was super friendly, communicative and punctual, he was easy to meet up with and had a nice checklist for the things he likes done when you put the boat away. His boat was clean and in great shape, everything worked well and we really enjoyed our morning sail out to alcatraz and back.
I would rent from Eric again and would recommend him to anyone.
Eric, as usual, is a great guy to rent from. The whole Boatbound experience was smooth and easy. The Catalina 27 is perfect for a group of four, roomy and stable. We had the best sail, a full tour of the bay area, Alcatraz, the skyline, under the bridge and over to sausalito, tiburon, then back home. Eric's boat is in such good shape, he takes great care of it and and it handled well in the afternoon conditions in 25 kt winds. Thanks Eric! We'll be back again.
This was the 2nd time we rented from Eric. We had a blast, and our experience was perfect. He's nice, thoughtful, friendly and his boat is in great shape! We sailed to angel island, had a picnic and the weather couldn't have been better. Berkeley marina is a great spot to sail from too. We'll definitely rent his boat again.
We have rented Eric's Catalina the second time, and had another great day on the water. Eric was as usual very easy and relaxed to deal with, while taking his time to make sure we have all questions answered before we leave. The weather was great, and the Catalina was a great sail also when the wind picked up. Thanks again for the great experience!
We had a great time on Eric's boat. We started with Angel Island, then sailed towards the golden gate bridge and go back through Alcatraz in one day. The wind was just good enought and the Catalina 27 was easy to maneuver within two people on board. Eric took the time to explain us everything we had to know on the boat and was really knowledgable about sailing in San Francisco Area. I definitly recommended Eric and his Catalina 27 which is a beautifull boat.
Thank you again for this great time, I hope we'll see you again.
Sunday, January 24 turned out to be a gorgeous sailing day on the San Fransisco bay out of the Berkeley Marina on Eric's 27 Catalina. The prior week was rainy and cold. Eric was great to work with. It was my first experience with Boatbound, so I was a bit leery of giving up my credit card a month before I planned to sail not knowing what the weather would bring, but Eric made me feel comfortable; telling me we could cancel at the last second if weather didn't cooperate. My crew of 5 and I had a great sail over to Alcatraz. We motored sailed for the first hour, then the wind came up 10-15 mph and the boat handled great. We enjoyed lunch on the boat with beautiful sunny blue skies. Eric was responsive to all my questions and met us on time to pick up the boat. I look forward to chartering Eric's boat again.
We had a great experience with Eric and his Catalina 27 and would highly recommend Solace for sailing in the bay. The boat is well maintained and clean. Everything is in good working order, including the inboard engine, sails and rigging. Eric was responsive, on time and knowledgeable about sailing in the San Francisco Area. The marina is in a good location for a day trip to Angel Island or sailing San Francisco Bay.
This was my second time out on Eric's boat, and it was a very good experience yet again. Everything on the boat works, it is clean and well maintained. Eric met us at the harbor at the agreed-upon time, we went over the checklist quickly and were on the water in 20 minutes. The main and roller furling jib sheets are conveniently located on the cabin roof and the inboard engine is reliable and strong, All of this made for an enjoyable and relaxed day on the Bay. I will definitely rent Eric's boat again.
Skippering Solace was a pleasure. The boat is well maintained, has a good set of sails and quite a powerufl engine. The boat is also very spacious for its 27 feet, though with eight people on board we were a little cramped, especially during maneouvers. Eric is very friendly and more than happy to share his knowledge about sailing in the Bay.
Eric was nothing short of a pleasure to deal with. Easy going, accommodating and full of local knowledge. His Catalina was perfect for our group of 5. It's roomy in the cockpit and has plenty of space below. Feels more like a 32! She handled well on our way over to Angel Island, where we picked up a mooring, had a picnic and went for a swim. On our way back we had a stiff breeze but the boat handled very well under full sail. Sailing out of Berkley Marina is wonderful. It's well protected and has a great view! Thanks Eric, we'll see you again!
Great boat, everything is working, and it all works reliably. Inboard engine fires up with a single turn of the key, and is more than enough power to move the Catalina 27 around. Berkley Marina is a nice easy in/out, sails up and drawing immediately upon leaving. The boat is well equipped, and sails wonderfully. The furling headsail plus all lines leading to the cockpit means no one need leave it during most sailing (which is great!) Eric was responsive and ensured I was comfortable with everything. Great owner, well recommended.
Solace is a great Catalina in excellent conditions.
We met with Eric in the morning before going out and he spent time showing us his boat around, and making sure we were comfortable with its equipment. We were out for 9 hours last Saturday and the five of us had a wonderful time, sailing to Angel Island, through the GGB, to China beach and back. I certainly hope I can rent it again.
Eric keeps his boat in fantastic condition. Everything was in great working order, and the motor performed very well. He was also very responsive in scheduling the rental, and was patient during the boat check-out. He gave great advice on where to sail. Fellow renters, treat this boat well so that Eric continues to list the boat!
We had a great sail on San Francisco Bay. Eric was very easy to work with and answered all our questions before we left. Solace is not new, but it is well-maintained and we had no issues on a windy day on the Bay. The boat is easy to sail and very responsive. We will definitely rent Solace again.
Eric was a great and relaxed guy and very helpful in setting up the boat. His Catalina is in great shape and very convenient to sail. As we had a very windy day, he helped us set a reef and made sure we know everything about the boat before we went on the water. We simply had an awesome day and would love to rent from Eric again.
Eric is a fantastic person, while I was checking out the boat with him my wife was playing with his kid and I think we were all extremely happy! As far as the boat goes, it's a nicely maintained Catalina 27 and Eric seems to take care of whatever issues come up nicely. He had a good feeling for the conditions on the day of our bareboat rental and set the boat up perfectly for us.
Eric and the Catalina 27 were great! The boat is in great shape, and really intuitive to sail. We had a fun time in the bay, and it is quite roomy (we had 5, and could have comfortably fit many more). Eric was super responsive and very helpful in the initial orientation. Would definitely rent again.
Eric was great to work at all steps of the process. This was my first boatbound experience and it couldn't go better. His Catalina took us through a wonderful tour of the bay, including Angel Island, 3 bridges, The Rock and Treasure Island. It got a little windy by the end, but two easy reefs in the main was all it took to get us sailing smoothly again.
The boat is in great condition. Eric does a great job with the walk through and explaining where to go on the bay for those that are unfamiliar with it. He is responsive (even when you are out on the water) and wants to help you have a great experience! Definitely will rent from him again!
Eric is fantastic. Super-easy to work with and gave us a good overview of his boat, Solace, before we left. Solace is a great boat for the bay, the cockpit would be a bit tight if you had more than 4 people because she has a tiller helm, but she has great sail area for a little boat so we were able to sail nicely even in light winds.
Eric and his boat were really great. He was extremely quick to respond, call back and answer any questions that we had. He did his boat walkthrough effectively and efficiently and even answered a question we had while out on the water.
In honor of Valentines Day, he had also cut out hearts to decorate the interior of the cabin.
The boat itself is clean, fast, easy to sail and has a nice motor and rigging.
I would certainly rent from him again and hope to do so!
Eric was great to rent from. He was on time and ready at the dock to meet us when we arrived. His Catalina 27 worked very well and I would recommend renting from Eric to anyone interested. Thank you Eric for helping my son Nick and I to have a great time sailing San Francisco Bay!
Great experience with Eric and the Catalina 27! He was super accommodating and we had a great time on the bay. As other reviews mention, some accessories/fixtures show the boat's age (not a sparkling luxury vessel, if you're going for glamor!) but solid and fun to sail. We look forward to renting the boat again.
Great experience. Eric was super helpful and explained us what we should know about the boat. The return process was super simple, everything worked out great. Definitely going to rent from Eric again. The sails are brand new, which is really neat. The boat is not the newest but in really good shape. Killer feature: cushions in the cockpit! ;)
Eric was very friendly and did a great job of orienting us to his boat before departure. We had a great time on the bay and Eric's boat "Solace" is truly a joy to sail. The boat is a nice example of the classic Catalina 27. The sails are new as well as much of the hardware and rigging and everything was in good shape and worked great. The engine was very reliable and functioned well in different conditions without any problems. On our return, checkout was very easy and Eric provided a simple list of items that was easy to follow. Overall, a great sailing experience on a great boat.
Eric was very friendly, easy to work with, and helpful showing us around the boat before we took off. He also sent a checklist for what to do when we returned, which was helpful.
As advertised, the boat is not the newest, but everything is functional, including the inboard engine, which ran like a charm, and new sails. We folded out the table and had lunch in the cabin before we sailed. The cockpit was big enough for the 6 of us (barely).
