Aboard since 2016
From New York, NY
Tim is a very nice person. His friends were also very pleasant. None of the friends, including the person designated as First Mate, knew how to sail well enough to help Tim. All were excited to go out with Tim, when I saw them, and willing to help when/if clearly directed.
The first part of the checkout went well. After a solo attempt at docking with his crew, under my observation docking, I joined the boat. I gave them all directions for better/safer docking skills and close quarter maneuvers. I requested before I got off the boat that Tim have one or more of his friends take a 'Competent Crew' course, with us or another company , to honestly have a qualified First Mate (one of our rules) before he rents from us again.
They had fun per Tim's report. The day was easy and winds very light. Tim called my phone, as requested, when back safely at the dock. That part was good.
Unfortunately boat was a notable mess after the charter. His charter was Sunday night, we are closed Mondays. A member who took the boat out today, Tuesday, said the boat was: not locked, sail not flaked correctly, sail cover half off the boom, lines not coiled, halyards not secured. There was red wine spilled in the cabin and a cork rolling in the cockpit.
Another of our rules is Hard liquor and Red Wine are not allowed to be consumed aboard. One puts crew/passengers at risk the other stains. Will send rules to any and all next time before accepting charters. The rules are few and simple - all are for safety and legality.
If Tim brings a qualified First Mate and posts a damage deposit, he can rent from us again, after he sees and signs-off that he accepts our rules for good seamanship.
