About Jim

“I grew up in a boating family in coastal New England. When I was 6 or so, I learned to sail on a sunfish. That was soon upgraded to a 17' daysailer, which my father and I sailed on lakes and Long Island Sound. After hurricane Gloria destroyed that sailboat and after a several year hiatus, my family bought a 17' bowrider, which we used and maintained for many years. I inherited this boat when I moved to a seafront house with a dock in Mystic, CT, and spent several years fishing and exploring Long Island Sound and the Atlantic, learning sea navigation with charts and a LORAN, handling rough weather, etc. I eventually moved out of that house and sold the bowrider (which I had converted to a coastal fishing boat by that point). My father bought a 27' Ericson sloop, and I sailed it with him for years before moving to California. I still sail it regularly when I visit New England, and I captain the boat when I'm there to give my father a break. I've attained my safe boating license in CT, and I've bareboat rented a Jay/24 in Monterey (after a quick demo of my sailing skills). I've also captained a 46' houseboat without incident, and crewed races on a 36' Catalina.”
