Boat Rules

Charter Policies Independent Boat Rental Options • Qualified-Certified sailors with SF Bay or similar area experience can charter a boat without a membership or a licensed Captain. We have 2 locations.  Our boats range from 15 to 35 feet, including 2 catamarans.  Be prepared to show certifications and provide a sailing resume listing experience. Expect to pay an extra fee for and do a checkout as described below. 1. Must be ASA 104 Bare Boat Charter certified, or equivalent certification from another internationally recognized agency, to sail independently on SF central Bay. ASA 114 is required for Catamaran rentals. Required to have a competent First Mate aboard with minimum of ASA 101/103. If Certified, but no local or like area knowledge, we can try to arrange a locally certified sailor to join you for an extra fee. 2. Certified sailors, the first time sailing with us will participate in a pre-cruise check sail to match your skills to your certification. Set fee $150. Expect this to take 1 to 2hr. NO SAME DAY CHECK OUTS. You will know your result as pass or fail within max 2hr. If fail will then have time to work with you to fill weak areas through classes or secure the service of a licensed Captain. The checkout process gives you local waterway and boat orientation. Will need only to do a shorter version if chartering different boats in our fleet there-after, at a reduced check out cost and can be same day for repeat charterers.. 3. If fail the check out, will need to add the cost for arrangements of a captain and crew to the cost of your charter at a fee minimum of $100 per hr. Suggest doing the checkout as early as possible to not miss the date you want to rent this boat. Bring your First Mate with you for their part of the check out. 4. Check Out On-the-water demonstration of skill includes: get the boat ready to sail, move away from the dock without incident, good engine skills, knowledge of USCG markers, set sail, tack and gybe safely, rules of right-away, good sail trim at each point of sail, heave-to, reef, crew-overboard return, put sails away then dock prepped & under control. Captained Charter Options • If wish to engage a Captain and your party is 6 persons or less, can choose the Captain package. We arrange a Captain and crew for you. ¥ If your party is over 6 persons (children included, max 8 on mono-hulls and 12 on cats) you need to rent as a bareboat, pay for the charter to this agency, then work with us to arrange a Captain of your choice from our list of licensed approved Captains, after this booking agency provides our contact information. You pre-pay our company the separate Captain fee, which we give to the Captain before you and your party board the boat. ¥ Tips after the charter are always appreciated.

  • Mary was awesome. She was a great instructor and got us up to speed since it’s been a while since we sailed. She was nice enough to go pick up some gas for us too to save us time at the fuel dock. Highly recommend her, we may go back for lessons / certification.

  • Mary and Mark were great. They had great communication, prompt, and informative. Anthem was in good condition, and a pleasure to sail. Based on my experience, I recommend this rental

  • We found the office and the boat without problems. Everybody was friendly and helpful. Checking in and out was painless. Anthem is an old boat, but she is in good condition. All the equipment is on board and working well. The boat was very clean. So overall a good experience.
The weather was great and we had perfect wind, all you need for a great day on the Bay.
It takes about and hour to motor out to the Bay. Take that into account for your plans.

  • This was my first experience with Boatsetter/Boatbound and was not sure what to expect. Mary asked me to come early to check out the harbor but due to poor information I went to the wrong place and they were closed. So day wasted. As it was, all I had to do was look at a chart with Mary and see where the shallows were and stay clear.
The boat was great. Loads of gear on board. Old but totally functional and sailed well. But as we were deep in the Alameda harbor with speed limits it took ages to get out and sadly we did not manage to sail far. When the wind came up it was time to return. So not sure if I will do this again unless I can spend the night or go back later.

  • Nice boat, good condition/equipment for light cruising. Mary and Paco were great. Recommended.

  • We had an amazing day on Anthem (Mary's Ericson 34-2). Mary communicated all the information we needed before arrival, and Paco was very helpful during check in and check out.

  • Thank you Mary for helping us get on the water Saturday! Perfect weather, perfect day, great boat. We'll be back!

  • Mary was great! She communicated everything ahead of time and made sure we were all set.

  • Our trip on Anthem was incredible. Granted, the wind and weather conditions were a big part of this, the Ericson 34 handled 15-20+ kn of wind beautifully. We were able to get from Afterguard in the Oakland Estuary, out to the Golden Gate Bridge and back before dark. It was a gorgeous day, and the Ericson sailed marvelously. The interior accommodations are plentiful and clean and comfortable. The exterior and clean and updated. The inboard diesel starts immediately and runs strong and moves the boat very well.

Though this vessel doesn't have a ton of electronic gizmos, the boat is easy to read. Overall, a great sailing experience. As always, Mary is wonderful to work with.
