Hi, my name is Andy and I will be your host and captain aboard UPBEAT. I hold both a US Coast Guard captain's license as well as Sailing Instructor credentials from US Sailing - The official governing body for the sport of sailing in the United States.
You don't have to take part in running UPBEAT, but most people like to. Guests generally find that learning something about sailing makes the trip an even more enjoyable experience.
On day trips, if you choose, we can stop and drop anchor to relax for a while at one of several delightful spots nearby. Or go ashore at one of a number of delightful destinations.
Marine life such as harbor seals, California sea-lions, harbor porpoise, and occasionally even Orca, or humpback whales may be seen.
UPBEAT is a well kept, modern and comfortable yacht; a fine example of the very popular Catalina 42 model, one of the most successful cruising sailboats ever produced.
UPBEAT's great design delivers lively performance to satisfy even the die hard sailor whilst her size and solid feel convey a reassuring sense of safety for those new to sailing.
UPBEAT boasts generous accommodations, which include a spacious salon, a full galley (kitchen complete with a stove and refrigeration) and 2 heads (bathrooms.) For overnight stays there are 3 private double cabins for sleeping aboard.

A group of my girlfriends just had the most amazing 8 hr sailing trip this weekend with Andy and his wife Chris. They are friendly, accommodating, experienced, and fun. We sailed from Shilshole to Bainbridge, got off to walk around a bit and have lunch, and then went in to Elliott Bay for some downtown views and back up the coast to Shilshole with some great afternoon winds. Andy and Chris provided some delicious snacks that went perfectly with the vino we brought. They were very communicative before our trip, and we were prepared for the cool breezes. The boat had plenty of room for everything we needed, including a roomy fridge. There are two toilets, and a few of our crew took advantage of the bedrooms for a quick afternoon nap! It was a lovely day with lovely people. Thank you to Andy and Chris for making our sail the best part of our girls' reunion weekend!
We really enjoyed our cruise around Puget Sound with Andy and Kris. It was a great way to finish off the summer
before the teens went back to college. They learned a lot about sailing and look forward to going out again in the future. Thank you.
My family had a wonderful day with Andy on Upbeat. We were looking forward to learning more about sailing in the sound, having some more limited experience with lake sailing, and Andy was very friendly and helpful in bringing us up to speed. We appreciated his flexibility in planning given the changing weather conditions during the day. Definitely recommended.
Our group had an amazing time with Andy and Kris, they are both very knowledgeable and experienced sailors. We quickly charted a course before taking off and Andy was able to take us to all of our destinations with very accurate timing. Andy's sailboat UPBEAT was very roomy and in immaculate condition and they even had some tea and snacks for us as well. Would definitely sail with them again. Thank you both for such a great experience! Cheers.
This was an amazing day! We sailed north toward Kingston Harbor, took a break from the wind in Hidden Cove for relaxing lunch, docked in Eagle Harbor for stroll and did a sunset sail back Shilshole Bay. Above all Andy is a very personable and a knowledgeable captain, if you don't have the sailing bug yet this trip will make you want to sail every weekend. Thanks Capt'n Andy and first mate Ross!
Sailing with Andy and his wife, Kris on their Catalina 42 was an incredible experience that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a unique, memorable day on the water. In fact, a few of us are already discussing opportunities to hopefully get together with them again for another adventure this summer! As someone who was new to Boatbound and new to sailing, the experience really began when I reached out to Andy and inquired about his listing. His prompt replies throughout our communication and patient, thoughtful answers to all my questions made me realize very quickly that we had selected a highly credible Captain who would ensure our trip was safe and exceeded our expectations.
Once we had all the logistics coordinated and the 6 of us arrived to the boat (which was impeccable), we were met with warm, friendly hospitality from Andy and Kris that continued throughout the duration of our 10 hour day on the water. They took time to ensure proper safety measures were in place and that we were all well acquainted with the boat before we departed. They were also very knowledgeable of various marinas and helped us decide our route. We set sail around 1pm on Sunday, June 14, 2015 from Shilshole Marina and headed for Kingston. We got off the boat there for a bit and had a late lunch/early dinner at The Filling Station, a fun pub walking distance from the Kingston Marina. We made our way back to the boat and had a leisurely sail towards Seattle where we enjoyed the beautiful skyline from the water and got to look into a breathtaking sunset as our adventure wound down for the day.
The 6 of us who went sailing that day couldn’t stop talking about it for weeks. We were so grateful to have had the opportunity and in our own ways, I believe we all walked away with a renewed appreciation for our environment along with a new respect for the art and science of sailing. Since that trip, I have personally mentioned the Boatbound website along with Andy and Kris’s listing to many different people. If you are considering a sailing trip and looking for a passionate, professional team who is completely invested in your experience, I hope you choose a trip with Andy and Kris.
