Captain Chris Vallee is a California native, outdoor enthusiast, and Delta resident that grew up fly fishing and paddle boating throughout the state. Following his enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corps he began building his waterman resume by working for state and private natural resource groups on fisheries projects in the Central Valley. Chris’s realization that working outdoors on the water for the wildlife that he treasured motivated him to pursue a career as a boat captain. Chris’s pursuit of becoming a professional captain began by attending the Professional Mariner Program at the Chapman School of Seamanship. There he earned his USCG 100 ton, Near Coastal, Master License. Upon completion of the maritime school, Chris began work onboard an exploration yacht that traveled the Caribbean and along the coast of Florida from the Keys, Bahamas, and Cuba to the Cayman Islands while scuba, free diving and fishing. Chris chose to depart the warm, clear Atlantic and return to the West Coast where he felt he could put his energy and effort into his home waters – in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Happily, he took a Scientific Research Vessel Captain position and has been living and working in the Delta ever since. His role as a Delta and Bay Science Captain has evolved over the years to include Project Manager and Master Watercraft Safety Instructor for the federal government. Chris’s goals are to assist in providing a path for connecting people with the water, to model and promote exemplary environmental stewardship, and to support the critical water resource management needs of California. During his free time Chris enjoys fishing, paddle boarding, free diving, playing tennis, pickleball, and kiteboarding.
