The Hurricane Deckboat is one of the best platforms for visiting Egmont or Shell Keys, touring Bunces Pass and anchoring for shell hunting or sunning on the abundant sandbars around Tierra Verde. Tired hanging out? Go tubing on beautiful Boca Ciega.
We rented this boat for my friend’s birthday and to go see gasparilla. While Doug seemed nice through messaging and over the phone, he was not present the entire process of picking up or dropping off the boat. The staff at the rental place was great.
The boat was as pictured, however all the gauges did not work. The entire time we were out on the boat, the average speed was 10 mph. Going this speed the whole time prevented us from making it to Gasparilla. We spent all the time we had the boat driving toward Gasparilla until we realized we wouldn’t make it, at which point we had to turn back. When we returned, we asked about the slow speed, and the lady said that apparently the hall of the boat had too much water so the boat would not get level. The staff also mentioned that this caused us to use much more gas, which we were charged for.
Overall, Doug or his staff should have checked to make sure the boat was fully functioning before renting it out. We will not be renting here again.
We were very impressed with Doug and his son Connor. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate the day we had reserved a rental boat. Connor called in the morning to let us know about a small craft advisory. We decided to cancel our boat day due to the rough seas because we had small children with us. Doug was very accommodating and we were so impressed with their professionalism. We will definitely rent from Doug again in the future.
