The 36 foot Catalina is not only the most popular 36' sailboat but one of the easiest most comfortable and friendliest boats to sail. The Boat is set up for single handed sailing and in King Harbor you are out on the ocean in under 10 minutes. In Fall and Spring your chances of seeing a whale are very good and seeing dolphins and seals are an almost every sail experience. You can sail up to Marina Del Ray for lunch or dinner or eat before or after your sail at any of the 7 restaurants within a very short walk.

Our family went out for a sail this past Sunday to scatter the ashes of my father. He loved the ocean and he wanted the Pacific to be his final resting place. We chartered with Gary and his beautiful sailboat to help us fulfill this emotional and difficult task. I can not really express how compassionate, understanding, respectful, patient and helpful Gary was with all members of our family on board. He was extremely professional, and at the same time close and personal. My brother was the captain, (he is certified) and Gary said that he would be part of the crew. We all tried our hand at steering the boat and adjusting the sails. Gary added levity to our day at sea when needed, and made wonderful suggestions when were having a hard time proceeding with our task at hand. At the end of the day, we shared a light meal with Gary as we returned the Catalina 36 to her dock. By then we all so comfortable with him. It felt like we were old friends. We could not thank him enough as we departed. He made sure that we accomplished our goal safely. His boat was in perfect condition and clean as a whistle! All in all it was a peaceful, wonderful sailing experience under trying circumstances. Along with my family, we all thank Gary and his Cat 36 again and again. We could not recommend him more to anyone who would like to charter his boat.
Grace is a great daysailor, but in no way a safe overnight cruiser (at the time of writing). The description needs a few adjustments:
- has no chart plotter and is missing the most basic instrumentation (wind indicator, depthmeter, etc.). We found out at check-in, after full rental amount was already paid...
- windlass is not working, it is a pain to anchor
- BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT DECEPTION: there was only 20gal of fresh water on the boat, not the 85gal advertised. A major safety breach in my opinion.
The boat otherwise sails and motors great, batteries are new, fridge a good size and the dinghy a satisfaction.
Gary is responsive and friendly, only problem was to discover all that did not work with him at check-in.
What a wonderful sail we had. Gary and I had a wonderful time! Nice and easy sail up the coast and saw two whales! Gary is a great sailing mate and fantastic company. We traded off on captain duties as well as sail duties. We had a much better day than all the land dwellers on a Friday afternoon despite the fog! You should try it too! Thanks Gary - Isaac Stone
Thanks a million for yesterday's outing!! It was great to get back out on the water, and the kids all had a great time. Your boat was the perfect size, had everything we needed, and was easy to sail. Plus having you there made it a lot less stressful trying to dock it for the first time. We'll definitely reserve it again!
