The boat

"Brazo", as she is named, is a well maintained Sundowner 32, unique with her beautifully varnished Teak inside and out. Always a head turner at the docks and a perfect choice for creating lasting memories in Puget Sound. The 12' beam, fiberglass hull, and hard chine makes this cruiser extremely stable, safe, spacious, and comfortable for your family and friends to move around. The layout is ideal for long weekends for a family of four or a 7-10 day trip to the San Juans. While this trawler tug is set up for Puget Sound cruising, you will find it equipped for crabbing and salmon fishing (when in season - down riggers, pots, and pot davit provided).

The dinghy is a kids favorite. West Marine, rigid bottom, complete with a reliable 9.9 Yamaha outboard. With Brazo's easy davit launch, you are on your way with your family to hidden adventures and beaches in five minutes! Take this tender with you or leave it in Edmonds, it's up to you depending on your cruising plans.

Brazo is moored in the Edmonds marina, ready to go, and easy to show. A favorite weekend overnight trip is to Poulsbo, a great short and scenic cruise. Once there you have immediate access to quaint store fronts, famous bakeries, and restaurants - all within a two minute walk from the beautiful and protected harbor and marina. Put down the dinghy, and motor about the harbor - its all about a relaxing boating experience. If you're looking for a perfect weekend trip, the Edmonds to Poulsbo cruise is hard to beat for a two day, one night excursion.

Two other short trips are towards Fort Flagler and Port Townsend. Perhaps you would like to cruise to downtown Seattle, and spend a night or two in their marina just a short walk from Pike Place market. Another good three day trip is a loop south to Gig Harbor day 1, then NW to Poulsbo for day 2, heading back casually on day 3 NE through a nice scenic route back to Edmonds.

The San Juan's is a fun trip of course! We plan a minimum of four to five days and avoid the drama of Deception Pass and simply go up through the slough, stopping in La Conner for lunch and scones. Continue your trip and make Friday, Roach, Fisherman's Bay, or Deer Harbor in time for dinner. Doing the San Juans clockwise is also a great way to go - head out early with the tide out through Admiralty Inlet and pull into Roche Harbor for your first night. Make no mistake, this is a pleasant ride at its displacement hull cruising speed of 8 knots. There's no hurry, just relaxation and great conversation. Everyone enjoys walking about the cabin and the walk around deck while under way, the speed is somehow the "just right" cruising speed, whether calm or in a little Puget Sound chop. Sit out on the bow and take in the Puget Sound gentle breeze, sit aft and enjoy your beverage as you take in the sites and sounds. The Pilot House has room for several to take in a panoramic view. Sometimes kids lay on top of the Pilothouse as there is plenty of space for sunbathing.

Charming as it is, you aren't really roughing it out there if your family prefers some creature comforts! The galley is well configured, double sink, hot water, microwave, ample refrigerator (and a separate freezer if you need it). Perhaps the favorite luxury is the ice maker! If you want to cook while underway, you can fire up the diesel Genset (though the onboard inverter will power nearly all standard voltage AC equipment without the need to fire up the generator). There is a private standup head, complete with "boat shower" and piping hot water. In the well appointed galley, you will find a three burner electric stove and oven. BBQ setup aft. Easily seat four around the cabin table, watch movies at night on the ample flat screen with blue ray. Enjoy your music on the bluetooth enabled BigJambox. Brazo is equipped with a heat pump which provides both heat for cooler evenings and AC on hot days. Sleeps two in the bow salon, two in the cabin amidship on the convertible table, and one in the pilot house (ideal for one of your kid's friends).

I think you will find this 32 has more than ample space due to its excellent design by the now famous mega yacht designer, Jack Sarin. Single handling Brazo is no problem. This means more fun for the crew and less hassle for the Captain! While you need to understand the fundamentals of operating a single screw diesel, you will find Brazo to be easy to handle and the Cummins turbo diesel is both smooth and reliable. Your experience level should include operating vessels of 28 ft or larger. She backs to Starbord and the controls are simple. No extraneous items. If it's on this boat, it has a purpose with safety and reliability top priorities. Garmin GPS and Sonar, Furuno Radar, VHF Radio, loud hailer, basic autopilot, anchor, and windlass. Plenty of storage throughout. Cruising range is 400 miles. Brazo sips fuel, which leads to one more surprise - your wallet stays in tack when you top off at the end of your trip. At 1,200 RPM, she will reliably come in under 4GPH. Make the most of your boating plans this year and take advantage of our discounted weekly rates.

FAQ:

(Q1) What kind of experience do I need? (A1) At a minimum, you need to be an experienced boater with vessels at least 28' in length. You need to have your Washington Boater's Safety Card as required by state law (courses available online) or equivalent. If you have experience with ski boats on lakes, that is a good start, but not adequate to pilot this vessel safely primarily because of close quarter boat handling skills that are necessary in Puget Sound marinas with tides, current, and wind to consider. A simple question is whether you have owned and operated a 28'+ vessel before? If not, you likely don't yet have the skills to operate Brazo safely.

(Q2) Do you offer discounts for winter rates or will you provide this vessel outside of Boatbound? (A2) No discounts with the exception of weekly rates (10% discount for 7 or more days). All bookings are through Boatbound as they provide excellent support for both parties and arrange the insurance - it protects everyone.

(Q3) Will you captain for our party or instruct? (A3) No, as specific coast guard rules apply to "captaining" a vessel for fee. Once approved through Boatbound, I will show you the operating systems of the vessel prior to your trip; however, I'm not a licensed captain nor instructor and do not wish to cross that line.

(Q4) Is this vessel right for us? (A4) Brazo is most typically ideal for the person who has operated boats of this size before and used to own a cruiser 28' to 36+'. If you have experience with this size craft, Brazo is an ideal choice for Puget Sound cruising.

(Q5) If I only want a one day experience with some friends, will that make sense? (A5) No, Brazo has a minimum rental period of three days. There is a learning curve and hassle factor that will outweigh the benefits of going out one time. Look ahead, if you see yourself on at least two, 3-day outings this year, then this is an excellent choice. A couple or small family on a week long trip to the San Juans, again, great choice. One day trip, not a good choice.

(Q6) How many people can I take? (A6) We suggest a family of four (with maybe a small fifth friend or child) is the max for cruising 3+ days. You will be too chummy otherwise. For pure luxury, you and your significant other can have a marvelous time as a couple in the San Juan's for a week or two and never move a object to it's "night time" location. I cannot imagine a better cruising vessel for a couple looking for extended cruising - a week here, a week there - with the time to do it!

(Q7) Can we cruise Canadian waters? (A7) No, Boatbound's insurance does not yet cover international waters. (Q8) Is there parking for our vehicle? (A8) Yes, we provide a parking pass for your vehicle. (Q9) What can I anticipate for fuel expense? (A9) Compared to most vessels, not much. The Cummins Turbo Diesel is a great engine - burns about as much as a diesel pickup truck. A weekend trip to Port Townsend or Poulsbo at full cruise and using the generator at times might burn 30 gallons (more or less depending on cruising speed, currents, and genset use). Most people find Brazo burns a modest 4-5 gallons/hour at cruise speed. Pay attention to the tides, keep her at 1,200 RPM, and you'll probably come in under 3 GPH! You can bring it back full or I can refuel for you using my tenant discount and pass the savings on to you. (Q10) What is the checkout procedure for operating the vessel? (A10) Once I've run you through the basic systems on the vessel the first time, you are good to go thereafter. This typically takes 45 minutes. There is a simple one page form filled out prior to departure and a one pager on return. We will agree upon the estimated return time and you can text me when you're close - the return procedure takes about 15 minutes. We've put together a basic operators manual for Brazo with the details you and your crew can read prior or while underway. (Q11) What's onboard? (A11) Think of it like a floating condo. Brazo is set up clean with a full galley, the basics, bedding, towels, and then some. Show up with your travel gear and food, ready to have fun! (Q12) Can we take our pet? (A12) No. Brazo is filled with varnished Teak including the cabin floors which can be easily damaged by our furry friend's nails.

Still interested? Brazo is clean, fun, and reliable. This isn't just a pretty face, she is meant to be cruised and often! Brazo is taken out weekly, so you can be sure that your cruising surprises are minimized. Coast guard inspected and recent survey help ensure your safety.
