1. Bahia Honda State Park

Bahia Honda State Park.

This state park (approx. 500 acres) is located on the southern tip of Marathon Key and offers visitors a secluded beach experience. The sparkling waters and white sand beaches make Bahia Honda a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling. There is also a nature center where you can learn about the local plants and animals.

Bahia Honda State Park has the historic Bahia Honda Railroad Bridge, which is now used as a fishing pier. Visitors can also walk or bike along the trail that runs across the bridge.

You also have an offshore island here to explore as well!

2. Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas National Park.

Dry Tortugas National Park (47,125 acres) is located about 70 miles west of Marathon Key. This park is only accessible by boat or seaplane. Once you arrive at the park, you can take a ferry to Fort Jefferson.

This fort was built in the 1800s and served as a prison during the Civil War. This park is a popular spot for picnicking, swimming, and exploring the old fort.

The waters around Dry Tortugas National Park are crystal clear, which makes it ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving.

3. Sombrero Beach

Sombrero Beach.

Sombrero Beach is located on Marathon Key and is one of the most popular beaches on the island. The beach gets its memorable name from the large sombrero-shaped offshore reef.

The beach has white sand and clear turquoise waters perfect for snorkeling and diving. There are also several restaurants and bars to recharge your batteries.

The Turtle Hospital is located near Sombrero Beach. This facility rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured turtles. You can tour the hospital to learn more about these amazing creatures. Here’s a Pro Destination Tip:

Dogs are only allowed on the beach when it’s not turtle nesting season!
