The Secret to Happiness? Experience trumps material possession every time!

In today’s busy, complicated world, it gets harder and harder to move the “happiness needle.” As we set forth to achieve the perennial goal of success, balance and happiness, consider this:

Are we spending our hard-earned incomes on the wrong things? If our pursuit is happiness, have we set sail in the wrong direction?

Results from multiple recent studies indicate that experiences create happiness that is measurable. While material possessions help us attain feelings of status and achievement, they do not bring an increase in happiness to our lives. This is a fact long known by boaters….the thrill when the wind takes hold of the sails, the challenge to catch a bigger fish in unchartered waters, the special bond that forms with family while out on the water, these are the moments that create the love for boating that becomes a passion and a lifestyle.

The science says that purchases such as the latest tech gadget, the hottest Italian sports car or the newest designer handbag are actually counterintuitive to happiness causing anxiety, negative social behavior (such as showing off) and loss of appeal quickly after the purchase is made. On the other hand, experiences create memories that offer nostalgic feelings, social bonding and in-the-moment relaxation.

So, when we make decisions about what to spend our money on should we focus more on experiential purchases for things like concerts, trips, shows, boat trips, etc? The answer is: yes – that is, if we are in search of more happiness in our lives. (Which includes just about everyone, right?)

As South Floridians, we have many experiences to choose from in our pursuit of happy…many of them include sunshine, the Atlantic Ocean and boating adventures. Whether snorkeling the Florida Keys, dining dockside in Fort Lauderdale or enjoying the magic of Miami’s Biscayne Bay, happy boating moments are ours for the taking!

Boat rentals are a great way to make this happen if boat ownership is not in your plans. Captains can be added as the boat rental is booked so all you and your loved ones need to do is show up, relax and be happy!

What are your thoughts on this subject? Do material purchases make you happy? Agree or disagree – we’d love to hear from you?
