What Boatsetter’s new data report tells us about where Americans went, how they played, and who they spent their summer with.
Summer 2026 was all about getting out on the water. New data from Boatsetter shows people opted for lakes, chasing watersports, and above all more activity time with family and friends. From Gen Z to family outings, summer boating habits point to a bigger trend of activity, connection, and making moments count.
Key trends:
AMERICA PICKED LAKES THIS SUMMER
Lakes are having a moment. Freshwater trips beat saltwater (barely), but this shift is especially noticeable when you look at trending destinations. From Lake Austin to Lake Tahoe, lake escapes make it easy for the whole crew to hang, cast a rod, or just relax on deck.
GEN Z IS ON BOARD
Last year Gen Z (age 18-29) was Boatsetter’s fastest growing cohort. The trend continued over summer ‘26 with guests under 25 bookings nearly doubling. They’re not only on board, but they are booking and showing up for the experience.
GEN Z IS SEEKING ADVENTURE / PLAY

Browse ChartersWith watersports trips among Gen Zers up +48%, this summer brought out some serious, who’s going first? energy. For those not ready to clear the wake quite yet, tubes were the top add-on (beating floating mats). The takeaway? More people are craving more energy on the water.
THE MVP OF SUMMER BOATS
The pontoon is the boat of the summer– great for cruising, group trips, and hanging with friends. It’s no surprise as groups are opting for community and participation. For the anglers in the crew, you can even cast a casual line to see if the fish are biting. With a pontoon, the gathering is the point.
THE BUSIEST DAY ON THE WATER
America’s birthday weekend wins again. July 4th, 3rd, and 5th are top boat days – with the 4th as our unofficial official boating holiday. Sharing in collective holiday rituals is another reason to get outdoors and be together.

THE FAMILY BOAT DAY IS BACK
Last but not least: the active family trip is back. About 1 in 4 reservations are for a family trip. More family bookings are about more shared experiences outdoors.
This summer, Americans may have chosen lakes over oceans and play over sitting still, but more importantly, they chose togetherness and active participation. It’s a sign of a larger cultural shift: people are craving meaningful IRL connection, and seeking experiences where that connection happens outdoors and in motion. Increasingly, boats are becoming a top choice for that connection point.
With summer winding down, there’s still time to book a boat for the last “unofficial” weekend of summer: Labor Day Weekend. Book a boat, get together, and do something outside.
