The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish soldiers led by Captain Francisco Garcés in 1775. Garcés was on a mission to find an easier route from California to New Mexico. He and his men camped near what is now called Castle Creek, which flows into Lake Pleasant.

Lake Pleasant was created in 1927 when the American Municipal Power Company dammed up the Agua Fria River to create a reservoir for its power plant. The power plant was completed in 1930 and provided electricity to the cities of Phoenix and Tucson.

The lake was initially named Pleasant Lake, but the name was changed to Lake Pleasant in 1963.

The area around Lake Pleasant is now a popular recreation spot for boaters, fishers, campers, and hikers. There are several marinas and camping sites near the lake.

In 2014, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors voted to create the Agua Fria National Monument. The monument includes more than 21,000 acres of public land around Lake Pleasant.

• Only one person is allowed to be towed behind a boat at a time.

• Persons being towed must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device.

• Boats must stay clear of swimming areas
