Like anything in life, there are both advantages and disadvantages to marina boat rentals. If you don’t own a boat, and don’t have the means or desire to purchase one, then renting is the next best thing. Renting a boat can be a great experience as it allows non-boat owners to enjoy the boating lifestyle. It’s certainly a nice alternative to purchasing a boat and taking on all of the responsibilities that come along with boat ownership.

Before you run out to the closest marina your GPS takes you to, consider some of the pros and cons of renting a boat from a marina fleet.

Advantages of a Marina Boat Rentals

Convenience
Convenience is definitely a top factor when renting a boat. Renting a boat from a marina allows you to arrive and board the boat at one convenient location. When you’re done for the day, simply return the boat and be on your way.

No commitment
Owning a boat requires time, effort and quite a bit of investment. Not everybody has the means or desire to become a full-fledged boat owner. This is where renting a boat from a marina comes in handy. Boating enthusiasts can enjoy all of the perks of the boating lifestyle without having to commit to all of the responsibilities of boat ownership. You can spend the day entertaining friends and family, and then return the boat to the marina where somebody else will handle the flushing, wash down and other necessary maintenance issues.

Disadvantages of a Marina Boat Rentals

Less selection
Let’s face it, a marina is just not going to have the extra space and staff to store and maintain a large boat rental fleet of various sizes, makes and models. Usually, marina boat rentals will only have a few types of boats. Popular marina rental fleet boats include pontoon boats, small cruisers and sailboats. You won’t find a luxury yacht rental among a marina fleet. Nor will you find that 50-foot fishing trawler you’ve been eyeing. Also, during peak times, boats may be all rented out.

Boat quality
Marina boat rentals are rented by many people, and not all of them may be as careful and considerate as you would like them to be. Accidents happen, and the rental boat could have dents, scratches and poorly functioning equipment. It may be stored out in the open without a cover, which can result in worn seats and torn vinyl. Depending upon how well the boat is inspected and cleaned after the previous renter returns it, there could be trash left in the boat. This is not to say that this happens at every marina, but it is a consideration.

Inconvenient schedule
Marinas usually have a preset pickup and return time. In order to get your money’s worth, you must pick up the boat when the marina specifies as well as have it back at the marina in time. If the boat rental is not returned in time, there could be additional fees. Many marinas lock their gates at closing time, and you could be locked in for the night if you’re not back in time.
