Test Driving – The New Way to Shop for a Boat

There’s a new, easier  way to shop for boat!

The sharing economy, that includes start up giants such as AirBnB and Uber, has left no industry untouched and this reach extends into the boating industry. With the entrance of boat sharing platforms such as the one developed by South Florida’s, Boatsetter, boat buyers now have a new option to add to their boat shopping research process.

A boat purchase is a huge undertaking. There are seemingly countless options in the marketplace and prices can vary even among similar vessels. A huge amount of knowledge goes into making the right decision, including but not limited to: price, condition of exterior and interior, engine wear and tear, insurance requirements and much more.

In addition, to the considerations related to the condition and specifications of the boat, there are more subjective matters to consider, such as: budget, size preference, your family size, boating desires, where the boat will be stored…the list goes on and on.

With an array of boats for charter in the sharing model, a boat buyer can take a short (or extended) charter and anonymously experience what ownership of the targeted boat manufacturer or model might be like to own.

Of course, serious boat sellers will allow serious buyers to coordinate a sea trial or test drive of a boat prior to a purchase but it most likely will not entail spending 4 hours or more with an impartial captain, who may be a bit of an expert on the boat and its attributes or shortcomings. Additionally, during the charter excursion, the less-committed boat shopper can bring the family along to lend important opinion on comfort, function and performance with less pressure to make a decision.

Boat sharing adds a new layer of discovery to the boat buyer’s research process and may even, ultimately, result in a more educated and tailor-made buying decision.
