“I started sailing in 1989 and have been passionately doing so since. I've driven/ captained sail and motor boats (including twin screws) in Lake Michigan, USVI, BVI, Florida and the Mediterranean. I am available for charters as well as boat deliveries.”
Aboard since 2017
From Chicago, IL
I would not book again.
The Good: You can't beat being on the lake on a beautiful summer day and from a cost standpoint this fit in our budget.
The Bad: Not sure if the website is to blame or the Captain but I received a call 12 hours before we were to set sail that our 4 hour trip (which the website states is 4 hours) turned into a 3 hour trip. Reached out to Boatsetter and they said the charge was correct since his hourly rate is $150/hour but then why did your confirmation show 4 hours? Not ok. Tried working with the Captain to arrive earlier but he said his arm was injured and there would be too many people on the boat because he had to bring a co-captain. None of this makes sense. The boat is very cramped and you're not allowed to enjoy the front part of the boat. This would be a better experience for 2 people not 6. If you are allergic to smoke please make him aware as there will be cigarette smoking during your trip. Finally, was asked for gratuity to which we said no - having felt like we were misled by Boatsetter and the Captain.
Price was fair, but Capt. delivered a discounted product, like one of those dented cans you buy for 50% off at the grocery store. Didn't make much of an effort, didn't respond to our request to sail (yes it's a sailboat). I guess he didn't feel like doing the work and putting up the sail (the boom and the shrouds were covered in cobwebs, seriously...), despite there being sufficient wind (other sailboats were under wind) and our specific request to sail. We just kind of puttered around the outer navy pier for 3 hours as he occasionally yelled at us for "blocking his instruments". Dude is a putz, not worth it.
Joey was a fun captain. He showed us a great time. His boat is nice, enough room for us, the route he took was scenic, gave us a lot of opportunities to take great pictures of the Chicago sky line. It was worth every penny. Will definitely ride with him again at another occasion.
Overall, we did have a good time. However, it felt like Joey didn’t want to be friendly to us. We are a group of 6 very successful professionals and Joey did not respond nicely to us. He kept telling us what to do and didn’t let us enjoy the boat.. even though we paid money for... he expected gratuity and felt like he wanted to control everything. We tried to go to a familiar place on the lake and he decided for himself without asking our opinion. I would recommend AGAINST captain Joey.
Captain Joey’s excellence as sailor and personality as captain were essential in capping what became an immensely successful bachelor party I had thrown my best, life-long friend. Our embarkment from the Chicago Yacht club was coordinated was surprising ease as we began voyage of Lake Michigan. Due to adverse sailing conditions, we were unfortunately kept close to shore. Sympathetic, Captain Joey extended courtesy by allowing us to stay a half hour past our contracted time so that we may watch Saturday’s Navy Pier fireworks display from harbor. Professional service. Great conversationalist. Highly recommend.
We had a great experience with Captain Joey. While the weather wasn't perfect, we relied on Joey's experience and had a great time. Safety was paramount to Captain Joey and we appreciated that. The ship was great for our group of 5. We would certainly recommend Captain Joey and hope to get back out on the water with him.
