As a boater or just as a general vacationer, nothing is more appealing than the pristine blue waters and white sandy beaches that you can find along the Gulf Coast in Destin, FL—which happens to be known as one of our Top 10 Best Florida Boating Destinations. As you can imagine, all the action in this coastal city happens either out on the water or very close to it. If you’re heading to this area, it’s a good guess you’ll want to spend the majority of your time swimming, fishing, laying out in the sun, or getting your feet wet in some form of water sports. The best way to make this happen? By renting your very own boat.

Here at Boatsetter, we have a long list of boat options for you to rent in Destin—and you can opt to hire a captain or sit behind the wheel yourself. Once you have those details figured out, it’s time for some fun.

So, now that you have the boat, what exactly are you going to do with it?

Things to Do by Boat

What you can do with your boat can vary immensely depending on the type of vacation you have planned. For example, if you’re on a guys’ trip, you’ll likely want to hit up the best fishing spots in the area. If you’re bringing the family along for an adventure, you’ll want to have some other activities planned.

We’ve compiled a short list of some of the best things to do by boat to help get your started:

Explore Crab Island

This is a must-see attraction for all visitors to Destin, particularly those with a boat. Located on the north side of the Destin (Marler) Bridge, this huge tropical sandbar makes for the ideal place to anchor your boat and spend the afternoon in the sun. You’ll find plenty of other boaters in the area, along with floating restaurants and food vendors, floating stages with local bands, and much more.

Go Fishing in the Desoto Canyon

If you’re an angler in search of the catch of the day, you’ll want to head just a few miles off shore to the Desoto Canyon. Be ready for a fight, because the area’s been known as the home to some of the largest swordfish you can imagine. Check out our Fishing Charters experience guide to help plan your outing.

Dive into Snorkeling

When you’re surrounded by crystal clear waters, there’s never a better time to go snorkeling. Head to the local jetties for the best experience. If you’ve never been snorkeling before, there’s nothing to it—learn more in our Snorkeling experience guide.

HarborWalk Village & Dock-up Restaurants

In between the action, you’ll eventually need to head back to land to refuel—both your boat and your body. HarborWalk Village is the area’s number one location for shopping, entertainment, and waterside dining. When you’re ready to dock-up and dine, we highly recommend the following restaurants:

  • Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville
  • Crab Island Cantina
  • Harry T’s Lighthouse
  • Fish Heads Bar
