This island is the largest in the Keys at over 33 miles long, yet its population is around only 11,000 full-time residents. Most of the people here are visitors, and most of them have boating and watersports in mind. So, it should come as no surprise that there are plenty of dive shops, hotels, restaurants, and all types of boats for rent in Key Largo.With so much close at hand, it’s hard to know what to do first, but when planning your visit here, remember that Key Largo is known as the “Diving Capital of the World” for good reason. Six miles east of land you’ll find the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States, which is home to the nation’s first undersea preserve. Established all the way back in 1960, the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park encompasses around 90 square nautical miles. Plus, since there are six Sanctuary Preservation Areas where all forms of fishing are prohibited, Key Largo is known as a top destination for underwater wildlife photographers looking to rent a boat and dive Florida’s top reef and shipwrecks.What to KnowThere’s no shortage of boats around here, and whatever type best fits your plans should be easy to find. Some top types to consider looking for include:Safety RequirementsBoater Education: Anyone born after January 1988 must pass a safety education course and carry a Boating Safety Education Identification Card to operate a boat with 10 horsepower or more in Florida waters. Nonresident visitors to the state of Florida are exempt from this requirement if they carry proof of completion of a NASBLA-approved boater safety course or the equivalency examination from another state.Additional Regulations: All USCG safety gear requirements must be met and all children under six must wear an approved life jacket on boats under 26’ when underway. Additionally, boaters should be aware that it’s illegal to anchor on or otherwise damage coral reefs. Instead, pick up one of the free public mooring buoys which are white with a blue stripe. Things to Do in Key Largo by Boat
Go Scuba DivingAfter all, this is the scuba diving capital of the world, so if you’re a certified diver, how could you even consider missing out on this adventure? There are even options for non-certified divers, like full-day dive experiences that include all the necessary gear, start you out in a pool in the morning, and take you on a dive trip in the afternoon.Pro Tip: Wreck diving and reef diving are both options to explore here, but if you’re a relatively inexperienced diver, head for one of the reefs. Try SnorkelingIf scuba diving is a bit too much exertion, too expensive for your tastes, or you’re with children too young to dive, snorkeling still lets you get in touch with the undersea world. And while snorkling is generally done in shallower water than diving, there are lots of active reefs brimming with life in just 15 to 25 feet of water.Pro Tip: Time your visit during lobster season and you can catch a very tasty dinner as you snorkel. Enjoy some FishingThe fishing is utterly spectacular in Key Largo, whether you decide to head offshore for some deep sea fishing action or you take your casts in the flats and backcountry. Remember that fishing offshore to the east requires very different gear and tactics than heading west to the inshore grounds. If you’re not an experienced angler, it’s a good idea to consider booking a fishing charter so you can learn the ropes from a pro. Naturally, you’ll also need to avoid the areas where fishing isn’t allowed; see the Marine Sanctuary Zones map to find out where fishing is prohibited, and look out for the yellow buoys marking the perimeter of the zones.Pro Tip: Key Largo is an area where you can catch a flats “slam” if you get lucky, with a permit, a bonefish, and a tarpon all the same day. Where to Go Boating in Key Largo
Everglades National ParkHead west from Key Largo, and you’ll soon be in Everglades National Park, which includes countless tiny islands, bays, keys, and flats. This zone is heaven for inshore light-tackle anglers, and it’s also an incredible area for wildlife and bird watching.Seasonality: All year long the Park is accessible and full of wildlife.Wake Zones: Once you get away from Key Largo itself you won’t have to worry about no wake zones, but inside the park keep a lookout for manatee protection zones and note that there are numerous restrictions and requirements; for more information on rules and regulations visit the Everglades National Park Boating Rules page.Lat/Long: 25.05’25 x 80.40’04Pro Tip: With so many different islands and flats this area can be incredibly confusing to navigate — having GPS is an absolute must. Christ of the AbyssThis underwater monument (also called “Christ of the Deep” and “Christ of the Sea”) is one of Key Largo’s main attractions. It’s a nine-foot, 4,000-pound bronze statue on a 20-ton concrete base, sitting in about 25 feet of water in the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Surrounded by corals and fish, it’s a famous venue for underwater weddings.Seasonality: All seasons, but spring or summer the seas tend to be calmest.Getting There: This is in the open Atlantic, so you’ll want to navigate here by GPS. Lake SurpriseThis interesting little body of water is bisected by the Overseas Highway. It draws anglers and explorers, but the unique experience to be found here is simply creeping along in your boat and watching the wildlife. There are crocodiles. Lots of crocodiles. And there are manatees. Lots of manatees. Inside the bridge is a Wildlife Management Area, so be sure to check the rules before visiting.Seasonality: All seasons.Wake Zone: Once passing under the bridge, the entire east side of Lake Surprise is a no-wake zone.Lat/Long: 25.10’46 x 80.22’45Pro Tip: Depths are around three feet and there’s that bridge to worry about, so sailboats and large powerboats should think twice before venturing here.Google Maps Link
