When you hear “luaus and mai tais,” your first thoughts should circulate around the beautiful islands of Hawaii—and specifically the island of Maui. Although not located within the continental United States, Hawaii is just about as close to paradise as you can get on American soil. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned angler or a novice who has only picked up a fishing pole once in your life—when you’re in Maui, deep sea fishing is a priority bucket list item that you need to check off. Plan your own fishing charter and you’ll have a chance to hook dolphin/mahi-mahi, wahoo/ono, yellowfin tuna, and blue or striped marlin.

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving

If you prefer to swim with the fishes rather than catch them, grab your snorkel or your scuba gear and dive in. You’ll immediately be entranced by hundreds of tropical fish and colorful corals. Head over to Mokulei’a Bay Beach, Kapalua Bay Beach, Honolua Bay, or Maluaka Beach for the best experience—you may even spot a few green sea turtles along the way.

Sunset Cruising

Before leaving the island, take a moment to enjoy all the breathtaking scenery that Hawaii has to offer—including the sunsets. Organize your own sunset cruise and catch the last glimpse of the sun as it sinks into the ocean. One of the best locations for sunset cruising is near the Haleakala Crater.

When you’re ready to take a brief break from the action, cruise over to one of these waterside establishments to satisfy your appetite.

Mama’s Fish House

Not only is Mama’s Fish House rumored to have the best mai tai’s on the island (be sure to order the “Mai Tai Roa Ae”), but it’s also been known to offer some of the freshest seafood you can find.

Seascape Maalaea Restaurant

Located near the Maui Ocean Center in Maalaea Harbor, Seascape is the perfect restaurant to dock-and-dine. The menu is filled with island-inspired dishes, and while you eat you can enjoy the stunning oceanside views—and if you’re lucky, you may even spot a humpback whale just offshore.

Local Boys Shave Ice

You can’t visit Maui without trying some authentic Hawaiian shave ice. Set your course to Lahaina Harbor and dock your boat, then after a short walk you will come across the Local Boys Shave Ice shop. Try up to three flavors at once, including some local-favorites like Kiwi, Shark’s Blood, Papaya, and Coconut.
