Explore Santee National Wildlife Refuge

Located in Clarendon county South Carolina. The refuge was established to compensate for the loss of habitat. They created the Santee Cooper Lakes which total 15,000 acres and make up the refuge. Over 4,448 acres are owned by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The refuge has over 39 miles shoreline along Lake Marion. It has a diversity of bird life and abundant opportunities to enjoy wildlife observation, education, hunting, photography, and fishing.

Because of the presence of tons of bass, most people choose to fish in this river rather than in nearby ones. It is slow flowing and usually quite shallow. Advisable to take a smaller boat like the canoe.
